Microsoft has entered the fray in low-end enterprise search, with the announcement of its intention to offer both free and paid-for versions of server software to compete with offerings from Google and IBM.

Search Server 2008 and Search Server 2008 Express are the newest addition to Microsoft's enterprise search line up, which includes Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007.

The new products will compete against Google's Mini and Search Appliance, as well as against IBM's freebie software, OmniFind Yahoo! Edition.

Yahoo has agreed to settle a lawsuit brought against it on behalf of several Chinese dissidents, according to papers filed in a California court. No details have been given of the settlement but Yahoo will be covering legal costs.

The case alleged that Yahoo had provided information to the Chinese government that had then been used to prosecute the dissidents. Yahoo said it had to comply with Chinese laws to operate in the country.

A statement released by the World Organization for Human Rights USA, which brought the case, said that Yahoo had decided to settle the case following criticism at a US Congressional hearing on 6 November.

European Union regulators have launched an in-depth investigation into Google's $3.1bn (£1.5bn) takeover of online advertising firm DoubleClick. The EU Commission said its initial probe had shown the deal would raise competition concerns. It has set itself a deadline of 2 April 2008 to reach a decision.

Google said it would work with the Commission to show how the acquisition would benefit publishers, advertisers and consumers.

The SEO industry in the beginning of 2008 is looking for the small business rather than the big brands. When we talk about the small business, two things are coming into our mind as 1) there is no money in small business 2) small business owners are very busy to be clients. Before dismiss the small business clients we need them to understand and appreciate SEO and SEM.

Buying links is not the only way to increase the rank and position of your website; of course it is very easy to buy links to increase google page rank, which is not an ethical SEO.
